Universities and courses set their own entry requirements. Some ask for specific grades or subjects instead of a Tariff total, and they may only count certain qualifications. Always check the individual course page before applying.

What are UCAS Tariff points?

The UCAS Tariff assigns points to many UK Level 3 qualifications so different qualifications and grades can be compared on one scale. Some course entry requirements are shown as a points total; other courses do not use the Tariff at all.

Tariff points are not a judgement of whether one subject is “better” than another, and they are not a complete admissions decision. Universities decide which qualifications they accept, whether subject content is relevant, and how many points they will count.

How are UCAS points calculated?

Each supported qualification and grade has a published value. Choose the exact qualification type and grade, then add the values for qualifications a course is willing to count. For example, an A level at grade A is worth 48 points, while an A level at grade B is worth 40.

What qualifications earn UCAS points?

The Tariff covers regulated Level 3 qualifications (SCQF Level 6 in Scotland), including A levels, AS levels, T Levels, many BTEC Nationals, EPQs, Scottish Highers and some other awards. This tool also supports IB Higher and Standard Level subjects because the IB Diploma is regulated in the UK.

A-level UCAS points

One A level ranges from 16 points at grade E to 56 at A*. Three A levels at BBB are 120 points; three at AAA are 144.

BTEC UCAS points

BTEC points depend on the exact qualification size and grade profile. A National Extended Diploma at DDD is 144 points. Confirm whether you have an Extended Certificate, Diploma or Extended Diploma before calculating.

IB UCAS points

The calculator supports individual IB Higher and Standard Level subject grades. Many universities state IB entry requirements as an overall Diploma score and named Higher Level grades, so check the course wording rather than relying only on a converted total.

T Levels and Scottish qualifications

Completed T Levels, Scottish Highers and Advanced Highers can carry Tariff points. Requirements can still specify a particular route, subject or component grade.

Do all universities use UCAS Tariff points?

No. A course might ask for “120 points”, “BBB including Biology”, a BTEC grade profile, an IB Diploma score, or a combination of requirements. Even where a total is shown, the university may restrict which qualifications count or require points from a set number of awards.

How many UCAS points do I need?

There is no single number for university entry. The right target is the published requirement for each course and entry year. Build a shortlist that reflects your grades and priorities, then verify every course directly before you apply.

Common UCAS Tariff questions

Do GCSEs earn UCAS Tariff points?

No. UCAS Tariff points apply to Level 3 qualifications (SCQF Level 6 in Scotland), not Level 2 qualifications such as GCSEs. Universities may still set separate GCSE requirements.

Can I add an AS level and A level in the same subject?

Usually only the highest level of achievement is counted. If your AS and A level are in the same subject, do not assume both totals will count. Check the course requirements or ask the university.

Do all universities use UCAS Tariff points?

No. Some universities publish a Tariff total, while others ask for named qualifications, specific grades or particular subjects. A course may also combine these requirements.

Does a Tariff total guarantee that I can apply?

No. The total is only one part of entry requirements. Course-specific grades, subjects, admissions tests, portfolios, interviews and other requirements may also apply.

Why can’t I find my exact BTEC or other qualification?

Qualification titles, sizes and awarding bodies matter. This calculator covers common qualification types only. Use the official UCAS calculator and ask your school or college to confirm the exact title or qualification number if you are unsure.

Can I use predicted grades?

Yes, you can use predicted grades to estimate a possible total. Treat it as planning information, not a confirmed result or an indication that an offer is guaranteed.
