Where your 2027 medicine application stands now
The early UCAS deadline is behind you. Your priority now depends on whether your application reached UCAS on time. Keep this page for the 2027 entry cycle: the dates below should not be reused for a later year.
The official UCAS deadline was 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time for most medicine courses. Sending your draft to school was not the same as UCAS receiving the completed application. Check your application record if you are unsure.
If you applied by 15 October
Check UCAS and your university applicant portals, including spam folders. Keep copies of acknowledgements and record any requests for documents or further information. If an expected acknowledgement has not arrived, follow the university's published contact instructions rather than submitting another application.
Build a simple tracker with the medical school, applicant portal, outstanding task, deadline and confirmation of completion. Continue your schoolwork: a strong interview does not remove the need to meet an offer's academic and other conditions.
UCAT results: what happens after testing
The 2026 testing window ended on 24 September. For the UK UCAT route, the Consortium sends results to chosen UK universities in early November; you do not normally need to send the score yourself. Read the UCAT results instructions if your circumstances differ.
UCAT ANZ applicants: the UK-results collection process is separate. The Consortium specifies a 22 October deadline for the UCAT ANZ Results Collection Form when using those results for UK or partner universities. Check that official guidance promptly if this applies to you.
Universities use scores differently. A percentile or a previous year's threshold does not promise an interview this year. Follow the current admissions information for each course.
Cambridge medicine applicants should also check whether My Cambridge Application is required by 22 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time for their route. Read the Oxbridge next-steps guide and follow the college instructions.
Prepare for interviews without learning a script
Find out whether each medical school uses multiple mini interviews, a panel or another format. Practise explaining why medicine interests you, what you learnt from relevant experience and how you approach an unfamiliar problem. Preparation should help you think and communicate clearly, rather than memorise a supposedly perfect answer.
Use examples you can discuss honestly. Caring responsibilities, work, volunteering, reading and conversations can all prompt useful reflection. Protect other people's privacy: do not identify patients or share confidential details when discussing experience. Check each school's own expectations instead of assuming that one type of hospital placement is compulsory everywhere.
Revisit your submitted answers. For each example, ask: what happened, what did I learn, and what question would I explore next? Keep your own voice and avoid claiming skills or responsibilities you did not have.
If you missed the medicine deadline
Speak to your school or adviser, then contact admissions teams at the medical schools you are considering before adding a late choice. Ask whether your application could be considered for that exact course and entry year. Record their response.
Do not treat 13 January 2027 as a second medicine deadline: it is the equal-consideration date for most courses without the October deadline. Late medicine consideration is unusual and cannot be assumed. Neither Extra nor Clearing guarantees a medicine place.
Compare realistic alternatives, including a later application cycle, with care. A related science degree is a separate educational choice, not a guaranteed transfer into medicine. Check its content and career routes on their own merits.
Choices and the optional fifth course
UCAS permits up to five course choices overall, with no more than four in any one of medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine or veterinary science. A fifth choice is optional. You do not have to fill it with a course you would not want to study.
If you have an unused slot, check UCAS rules and the relevant deadline before adding a different course. Read our guide to using your UCAS choices and discuss suitability with the provider.
Planning medicine from Year 12 now
If you are in Year 12 in autumn 2026, you will normally be preparing for 2028 entry. Use Year 12 guidance to start course research and an evidence log, but verify the correct cycle's UCAT and UCAS dates when published. Do not simply move every date in this article forward by one year.
Your next practical step
If you have already applied, make a list of outstanding university tasks and start explaining your experiences aloud. If you have not applied, clarify eligibility and late consideration before spending time or money on an application. For general application preparation, use the free readiness check; it cannot determine medical-school eligibility or predict an offer.
Make your next application step clear
Use our free application readiness check to organise outstanding tasks, or ask about independent support. It does not predict an offer or replace course-specific admissions advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still apply for medicine after 15 October 2026?
Contact the medical school first. A late application is not entitled to equal consideration, and you should not assume a course will accept it.
Do I send my UK UCAT score to universities?
The UCAT Consortium normally sends UK UCAT results to chosen UK universities in early November. UCAT ANZ applicants using results for UK applications have a separate results collection process.
Is the fifth UCAS choice compulsory?
No. A fifth course is optional. Check the relevant subject limits and choose only a course you would seriously consider studying.
Does this timetable apply to current Year 12 students?
Current Year 12 students in autumn 2026 normally plan for 2028 entry. Check that cycle’s official timetable rather than reusing 2027 dates.
